News from our arhive: Animated family movie rakes. Vin Diesel |
Vin Diesel's reign over the box-office top 10 was short-lived, as an idealistic animated robot took down the muscle-bound actor this week. "Robots," the animated family movie that stars Ewan McGregor as the voice of lead robot Rodney Copperbottom, bowed at #1 with $36.5 million in ticket sales, according to early estimates. In the film, Rodney, a preeminent inventor hoping to meet his idol, Bigweld (Mel Brooks), embarks on a trip that leads him to an attractive executive robot named Cappy (Halle Berry) and an evil CEO named Ratchet (Greg Kinnear).
Diesel's "The Pacifier" didn't fare quite as well this week, dropping a spot from #1 to #2. The film, which features the action star as a Navy SEAL assigned to protect the children of an assassinated government scientist, took in more than $18 million. "Be Cool" suffered a similar fall, dropping from #2 to #3 with $10.3 million. Featuring a star-studded cast including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Andre 3000 and Cedric the Entertainer, "Be Cool" follows "Get Shorty" star Chili Palmer (John Travolta) as he ventures into a career in the music industry, taking on a burgeoning pop star (Christina Milian) as his first project.
This week's only other new release, "Hostage," had a mediocre debut, landing at #4. The thriller flick finds Bruce Willis playing a former hostage negotiator forced to rely on his old skills to foil a group of teenagers' plan to steal his family's car. In its first week in theaters, "Hostage" took in $8.7 million.
It may have been love at first sight for moviegoers, but the romance with "Hitch" has been cooling off recently. The romantic comedy starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes fell from #3 to #5 with $8.7 million. Meanwhile, "Million Dollar Baby" is still going strong after 13 weeks in theaters. The Oscar-winning film that stars Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood slipped from #5 to #6 with more than $5 million. Rounding out this week's top 10 are "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," which slid from #4 to #7 with $5 million; "Constantine," which fell from #6 to #8 with more than $3.6 million; "Man of the House," which dropped from #8 to #9 with $1.8 million; and "Cursed," which slipped from #7 to #10 with more than $1.5 million.
Overall, ticket sales were down slightly from the corresponding weekend last year. Next week, look for "Ice Princess" and "The Ring Two" to debut on the box-office top 10. Visit Movies on MTV.com for more from Hollywood, including news, interviews, trailers and more. |
