News from our arhive: Breeders Resurface At Surprise Show |
Resurfacing at a surprise club appearance Tuesday night in Los Angeles, the Breeders' Kim and Kelley Deal played new songs and classics and told fans they expect to record with producer Steve Albini next year.
The twin sisters appeared at Mr. T's Bowl in Highland Park, California, for an unscheduled set just before 8:30 p.m. and played for roughly 40 minutes, according to the club's owner, who is known only as Joe T." Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey) said Wednesday (December 13) that he has been working on an album with Kim Deal on and off for more than a year, and that Kelley Deal had also been involved in some of the sessions. He also confirmed that Kim had been working on putting together a live band. "Kim's been working on a new record sporadically whenever she's had time for over a year now," Albini said. The producer said he does not yet know whether the Breeders sessions will be a continuation of that material or whether the new group will be starting over.
Though Tuesday's show was intended to be kept secret, many fans learned of the Breeders' appearance, and the small club hit its 150 capacity by the time they hit the stage, according to a club employee. The group also showed up at the club on Saturday night but did not perform, Joe T. said. The performance marked the first time the Deal sisters had played live in public together in more than six years. They were backed by drummer Jose Medeles of 22 Jacks, bassist Mondo Lopez and guitarist Richard Presley of the recently revamped punk band Fear. Started in 1990, the first version of the Breeders included Kim Deal, former bassist for the Pixies, and Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly; Kelley replaced Donelly in 1992. The sisters, with an oft-revolving lineup of associates, haven't released an album of new material since 1993's Last Splash, which included their breakthrough hit, "Cannonball." The group last hit the studio to record the song "Collage" for last year's "Mod Squad" soundtrack.
At the surprise show, the group played 11 songs, including new ones titled "Too Alive" and "Fire in the Maid," the latter sung by Kelley Deal. Also in the set were "Flipside," "No Aloha," "Cannonball," "Safari" and "Tipp City," as well as "Mom's Drunk," by Kim Deal's post-Breeders band, the Amps. A spokesperson for 22 Jacks said that while Medeles was expected to play live and probably record with the Breeders, he is expected to return to 22 Jacks when that band regroups next year to record a new album. |
